What to eat during finals week

Finals week eating fails in a predictable way. You skip meals while you are working, then eat something enormous at midnight, then feel bad for the rest of the night. The fix is less about nutrition advice than about picking places that fit the shape of the week.

The shape is: unpredictable hours, no money, no time, and no capacity for decisions. That rules out almost everything that requires a plan and points hard at a small set of places — cheap, fast, open late, close to where you are studying, and consistent enough that you do not have to think about it.

The single most useful move is to find two or three of those in advance and stop choosing. Decision-making is the scarce resource during exams, and spending it on dinner is a bad trade. A rotation of three places you already know is worth more than the best restaurant in town.

The second is to eat something with vegetables in it at least once a day, which is easier as a restaurant decision than as a discipline decision. A banh mi, a burrito, a bowl of pho, a gyro, a curry with a side of greens — all of these deliver it incidentally, without requiring you to want it.

Savor Scout takes a sentence rather than a category, so the criteria above can go straight into the box. For this, something like “cheap, filling, open late, walking distance” works — it reads menus and reviews for those specific things and comes back with one place and the reasons it picked it.

What usually goes wrong

Building the week around delivery, which is the fastest way to spend a month's food budget in nine days. Energy drinks as a meal. And do not save up all your eating for one enormous late dinner, which is the thing that makes the next morning worse.

What to eat

Worth considering here: pho, sandwiches, tacos, noodles, curry.
