The food in Omaha
Omaha is a beef city with a stockyards history, and its steakhouse tradition is the genuine article rather than an imported format. It also has a plausible claim on the Reuben sandwich, said to have been created at a hotel here in the early twentieth century — contested by New York, as these things always are.
Less contested is the Runza, a Nebraska-specific bread pocket of beef, cabbage and onion, brought by Volga German immigrants and now a regional chain.
What to eat in Omaha
- Steak — A stockyards city, and the steakhouses are long-running and unpretentious.
- Reuben — Corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss, Russian dressing, grilled rye. Omaha's claim is a real one.
- Runza — Beef, cabbage and onion baked inside bread. Volga German in origin and specific to Nebraska.
- Czech and Volga German food — Kolaches and sausages from the surrounding farm communities.
- Sudanese and South Sudanese food — A significant refugee community, and one of the largest in the US.
Where to look
- The Old Market — Cobbled, walkable, and the main restaurant district.
- South Omaha — Mexican and Central American, plus the stockyards history.
Neighbourhoods and regional dishes, not restaurant recommendations. We have not eaten in Omaha, and a page claiming the best taco in a city it has never visited is worth nothing. Savor Scout reads menus and reviews when you search, and shows why it picked what it picked.

steak, sandwiches, burgers, barbecue — what separates a good one from an average one, and what to order.
Omaha has a population of about 434,353. Enough choice to argue about for twenty minutes, which is usually what happens. Savor Scout searches up to 35 miles around Omaha, so places just outside the city are still on the table when they are worth the drive.
How well supplied is Omaha?
Omaha sits in Douglas County, where the Census counts 475 full-service restaurants, 517 limited-service places, 155 cafés and snack bars and 187 bars — 1,334 places to eat or drink in all. Omaha makes up about 75% of the county's population.
That is 22.9 per 10,000 residents, comfortably above the national median of 19.4. Enough range that the deciding takes longer than the eating. Counter service edges out sit-down, which is the national norm.

How this differs from Google Maps and Yelp
Maps and Yelp are directories: they rank everything nearby and leave the deciding to you. Savor Scout makes the call and shows its reasoning — the match score, what it beat, and the evidence behind the pick. The underlying place data comes from the same public sources, so the difference is the selection, not the data.
