How to find a good American restaurant
'American' on a restaurant sign can mean a diner, a sports bar, a steakhouse, a farm-to-table bistro or a chain — so the useful question is not whether it is American but whether the kitchen is cooking or reheating.
What separates a good one from a bad one
- A short menu — A long American menu — pasta, tacos, sushi rolls and burgers — is almost always a freezer. Twenty items or fewer usually means fresh.
- A burger that tells you how it is cooked — Ask for medium and see if you get medium. It is the simplest check of a grill cook.
- House-made sides — Real fries, slaw made that day, seasonal vegetables. Sides reveal effort.
- Seasonal changes — A menu that shifts with the season is a kitchen buying ingredients rather than pallets.
- Reliable at lunch — A good neighbourhood American place is good on a Tuesday at noon, not only on a Saturday night.
What to order
- The burger — The benchmark dish.
- Roast chicken — If there is one, it is often the best thing on the menu.
- The seasonal vegetable plate — To check if the kitchen cares.
- A steak — If the place is a grill.
- Pie or a sundae — American dessert, done properly.

How Savor Scout looks for it
Because 'American' says so little, the search leans heavily on what reviewers describe — house-made, seasonal, from scratch — and on what you ask for, so a sentence like 'neighbourhood grill with a great burger' does more than the category ever could.
Looking in a particular city?
Each of these opens Savor Scout with the location already set, so you can say what you want and it searches from there. It covers 1,000 US cities in total — these are simply the largest.
