The food in Los Angeles
Los Angeles is the best eating city in America and the hardest to eat well in, for the same reason: the good food is spread across five hundred square miles of strip malls, and nothing about a building's exterior tells you what is happening inside it.
The organising fact is immigration. LA has the largest Mexican, Korean, Thai, Armenian, Filipino and Iranian populations in the country, and in most cases those communities cook for themselves rather than for visitors. A strip mall in the San Gabriel Valley will have regional Chinese cooking that does not exist east of here.
What to eat in Los Angeles
- Tacos — Al pastor from a trompo, carne asada from a truck, and a salsa bar that means it. The single thing LA does better than anywhere else in the US.
- Korean barbecue and banchan — Koreatown is the largest Korean community outside Korea, and the food is not adjusted for anyone.
- Thai food, at actual heat — Thai Town is the only officially designated one in the country. Ask for it properly spicy and it arrives properly spicy.
- Regional Chinese, San Gabriel Valley — Sichuan, Shaanxi, Hunan, Dongbei, Taiwanese — the deepest concentration in North America.
- Armenian and Persian in Glendale — Kebabs, lavash, tahdig. Under-visited and excellent.
Where to look
- Koreatown — Dense, late, and open when everywhere else has closed.
- The San Gabriel Valley — Alhambra, Monterey Park, San Gabriel — the Chinese food capital of the country.
- Boyle Heights and East LA — Mexican cooking with no concessions.
Neighbourhoods and regional dishes, not restaurant recommendations. We have not eaten in Los Angeles, and a page claiming the best taco in a city it has never visited is worth nothing. Savor Scout reads menus and reviews when you search, and shows why it picked what it picked.

Los Angeles has a population of about 3,884,307. In a city this size the problem is never a lack of options — it is that thirty good ones look identical on a map. Savor Scout searches up to 35 miles around Los Angeles, so places just outside the city are still on the table when they are worth the drive.
How well supplied is Los Angeles?
Los Angeles sits in Los Angeles County, where the Census counts 8,227 full-service restaurants, 9,336 limited-service places, 3,530 cafés and snack bars and 723 bars — 21,816 places to eat or drink in all. Los Angeles makes up about 39% of the county's population.
That is 22 per 10,000 residents, comfortably above the national median of 19.4. Enough range that the deciding takes longer than the eating. Counter service edges out sit-down, which is the national norm.
Those county figures also cover Long Beach, Glendale, Santa Clarita, Lancaster, Palmdale, Pomona, Torrance, Pasadena and 38 more, all within Savor Scout's search radius from Los Angeles.

How this differs from Google Maps and Yelp
Maps and Yelp are directories: they rank everything nearby and leave the deciding to you. Savor Scout makes the call and shows its reasoning — the match score, what it beat, and the evidence behind the pick. The underlying place data comes from the same public sources, so the difference is the selection, not the data.
