The food in Washington
Washington has the largest Ethiopian population outside Ethiopia, and that is the single most important fact about eating here. Injera, doro wat, kitfo and tibs are everyday food in this city in a way they are nowhere else in the Western hemisphere.
It also has a genuine native street food in the half-smoke, and a local condiment — mumbo sauce — that exists almost nowhere else and that most visitors never encounter.
What to eat in Washington
- Ethiopian food — Injera, doro wat, kitfo, and vegetarian fasting platters that are among the best vegan meals in the country.
- Half-smoke — A coarse, half-pork half-beef smoked sausage, split and griddled, with chilli and onions. Genuinely local.
- Mumbo sauce — A sweet-tangy red sauce served with fried chicken and wings. A DC creation.
- Chesapeake blue crab — Steamed with Old Bay, eaten with a mallet on newspaper. Seasonal, and closer to Baltimore's tradition.
- Salvadoran pupusas — A very large Salvadoran community, and pupuserias throughout the region.
Where to look
- Shaw and U Street — The historic heart of Ethiopian Washington, and where the half-smoke is from.
- Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant — Salvadoran, Mexican and Caribbean.
Neighbourhoods and regional dishes, not restaurant recommendations. We have not eaten in Washington, and a page claiming the best taco in a city it has never visited is worth nothing. Savor Scout reads menus and reviews when you search, and shows why it picked what it picked.

Mediterranean food, sandwiches, seafood, fried chicken — what separates a good one from an average one, and what to order.
Washington has a population of about 646,449. Enough choice to argue about for twenty minutes, which is usually what happens. Savor Scout searches up to 35 miles around Washington, so places just outside the city are still on the table when they are worth the drive.
Washington has more places to eat than most of the country
Washington sits in District of Columbia, where the Census counts 935 full-service restaurants, 846 limited-service places, 242 cafés and snack bars and 168 bars — 2,191 places to eat or drink in all. Washington makes up about 96% of the county's population.
At 32.7 food businesses per 10,000 residents against a national median of 19.4, this is one of the better-supplied places in the country. Choice is not the constraint here; narrowing it down is. Sit-down and counter-service places are close to balanced, with the edge to sit-down.

How this differs from Google Maps and Yelp
Maps and Yelp are directories: they rank everything nearby and leave the deciding to you. Savor Scout makes the call and shows its reasoning — the match score, what it beat, and the evidence behind the pick. The underlying place data comes from the same public sources, so the difference is the selection, not the data.
