The food in San Diego
San Diego's food is Baja food, and the border is twenty minutes away. The fish taco arrived here from Ensenada, and the city's best eating is still overwhelmingly Mexican — a fact that surprises visitors who arrive expecting beach food.
The other genuine local invention is the California burrito, which put french fries inside a carne asada burrito and turned out to be a very good idea.
What to eat in San Diego
- Baja fish taco — Battered, fried, cabbage, crema, lime, on corn. Judged on whether the batter is still crisp when it reaches you.
- California burrito — Carne asada, cheese, guacamole and french fries. A San Diego invention, and a serious one.
- Aguachile and ceviche — Sinaloan-style, citrus and chilli forward. Best in the Mexican neighbourhoods rather than on the water.
- Carne asada from a taco shop — The late-night default, and a whole category of restaurant here.
- Craft beer, and food built around it — More breweries than almost any US city, which has shaped the casual dining scene.
Where to look
- Barrio Logan — Mexican-American, long-standing, and the best eating in the city.
- Convoy Street — Asian food — Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese — concentrated along one corridor.
Neighbourhoods and regional dishes, not restaurant recommendations. We have not eaten in San Diego, and a page claiming the best taco in a city it has never visited is worth nothing. Savor Scout reads menus and reviews when you search, and shows why it picked what it picked.

tacos, Mexican food, seafood, Korean food — what separates a good one from an average one, and what to order.
San Diego has a population of about 1,355,896. In a city this size the problem is never a lack of options — it is that thirty good ones look identical on a map. Savor Scout searches up to 35 miles around San Diego, so places just outside the city are still on the table when they are worth the drive.
How well supplied is San Diego?
San Diego sits in San Diego County, where the Census counts 2,618 full-service restaurants, 3,052 limited-service places, 1,075 cafés and snack bars and 331 bars — 7,076 places to eat or drink in all. San Diego makes up about 41% of the county's population.
That is 21.5 per 10,000 residents, comfortably above the national median of 19.4. Enough range that the deciding takes longer than the eating. Counter service edges out sit-down, which is the national norm.
Those county figures also cover Chula Vista, Oceanside, Escondido, Carlsbad, El Cajon, Vista, San Marcos, Encinitas and 4 more, all within Savor Scout's search radius from San Diego.

How this differs from Google Maps and Yelp
Maps and Yelp are directories: they rank everything nearby and leave the deciding to you. Savor Scout makes the call and shows its reasoning — the match score, what it beat, and the evidence behind the pick. The underlying place data comes from the same public sources, so the difference is the selection, not the data.
