The food in San Jose
San Jose has the largest Vietnamese population of any city outside Vietnam, and that single fact does more to shape its food than anything else. The pho, banh mi, com tam and bun bo Hue here are as good as anywhere in the country and considerably cheaper than in San Francisco.
It is also, unglamorously, a strip-mall food city. The best restaurants are frequently in plazas with a nail salon and a phone repair shop, and the exterior tells you nothing.
What to eat in San Jose
- Pho and bun bo Hue — Deep Vietnamese community, and the central-Vietnamese dishes are available, not just the southern ones.
- Com tam — Broken rice with grilled pork chop and a steamed egg cake. A complete meal and widely available here.
- Banh mi — Among the best value food in the Bay Area.
- Mexican, in East San Jose — A long-established Mexican-American community with its own taquerias and bakeries.
- Filipino food — One of the largest Filipino populations in the US, and lechon, sisig and kamayan feasts to go with it.
Where to look
- Story Road and Tully Road — The heart of Vietnamese San Jose.
- East San Jose — Mexican bakeries, taquerias and mariscos.
Neighbourhoods and regional dishes, not restaurant recommendations. We have not eaten in San Jose, and a page claiming the best taco in a city it has never visited is worth nothing. Savor Scout reads menus and reviews when you search, and shows why it picked what it picked.

pho, Vietnamese food, Mexican food, noodles, sandwiches — what separates a good one from an average one, and what to order.
San Jose has a population of about 998,537. Enough choice to argue about for twenty minutes, which is usually what happens. Savor Scout searches up to 35 miles around San Jose, so places just outside the city are still on the table when they are worth the drive.
How well supplied is San Jose?
San Jose sits in Santa Clara County, where the Census counts 1,728 full-service restaurants, 1,601 limited-service places, 713 cafés and snack bars and 122 bars — 4,164 places to eat or drink in all. San Jose makes up about 52% of the county's population.
That is 21.7 per 10,000 residents, comfortably above the national median of 19.4. Enough range that the deciding takes longer than the eating. Sit-down and counter-service places are close to balanced, with the edge to sit-down.
Those county figures also cover Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Mountain View, Milpitas, Palo Alto, Cupertino, Gilroy, Morgan Hill and 1 more, all within Savor Scout's search radius from San Jose.

How this differs from Google Maps and Yelp
Maps and Yelp are directories: they rank everything nearby and leave the deciding to you. Savor Scout makes the call and shows its reasoning — the match score, what it beat, and the evidence behind the pick. The underlying place data comes from the same public sources, so the difference is the selection, not the data.
