How to find good dessert
The best dessert places make one or two things exceptionally well — a pastry, an ice cream, a cake — rather than offering everything. And the best restaurant desserts often come from kitchens with a dedicated pastry cook.
What separates a good one from a bad one
- Made in-house — Restaurants that buy in desserts usually say nothing about them. Places that make their own talk about it.
- Balance, not just sugar — Acidity, salt, texture and temperature contrasts.
- A specialty — Shops known for one thing are usually excellent at it.
- Seasonal fruit — Fruit desserts that change with the season.
- Open late — Dessert spots that stay open after dinner are made for exactly this.
What to order
- The house specialty — What the place is known for.
- Something seasonal — Whatever fruit is in.
- Something to share — Dessert is better split.
- Coffee or a digestif — Alongside.
- Ask what the pastry cook makes — In a restaurant.

How Savor Scout looks for it
The search reads for house-made, pastry chef, late-night and specific dessert names, so a sentence like 'somewhere for cake after dinner' does more than the category.
Looking in a particular city?
