How to find good ice cream
The best ice cream shops make their own in small batches, use real ingredients, and rotate seasonal flavours. Texture is the giveaway: dense and creamy, not icy or airy.
What separates a good one from a bad one
- Made in-house — Small-batch ice cream made on site. Many shops say so on the wall.
- Dense and creamy — Low overrun (less air) means a richer, denser scoop.
- Real flavours — Vanilla with flecks of bean, strawberry that tastes of strawberries.
- Seasonal rotation — Peach in summer, pumpkin in autumn.
- Samples — Good shops offer tastes.
What to order
- Vanilla — The test.
- A seasonal flavour — Whatever is fresh.
- Chocolate — Dark and rich.
- A waffle cone — Made fresh, if they make them.
- A sundae — With hot fudge made in-house.
