The food in Houston
Houston is the most ethnically diverse large city in the United States, and its food shows it more directly than anywhere else — partly because it has no zoning, so a Vietnamese crawfish place, a Nigerian restaurant and a Texas barbecue joint can sit on the same block.
The city's signature invention is a collision: Viet-Cajun crawfish, created when Vietnamese immigrants took over Gulf Coast seafood traditions and added garlic butter, lemongrass and chilli. It exists elsewhere now, but it started here.
What to eat in Houston
- Viet-Cajun crawfish — Boiled then tossed in garlic butter with lemongrass. Seasonal, messy, and genuinely a Houston creation.
- Texas barbecue — Brisket, salt and pepper, post oak. Houston's version leans a little more Mexican and Vietnamese than Central Texas.
- Banh mi — The Vietnamese community here is one of the largest in the country and the bread is taken seriously.
- Tex-Mex and breakfast tacos — Flour tortillas, queso, fajitas. A real cuisine with its own standards, not a lesser Mexican.
- Nigerian and West African — Houston has among the largest West African populations in the US, and jollof, egusi and suya are widely available.
Where to look
- Asiatown / Bellaire Boulevard — Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean and Malaysian for several miles.
- The Heights — Where much of the newer independent cooking has landed.
Neighbourhoods and regional dishes, not restaurant recommendations. We have not eaten in Houston, and a page claiming the best taco in a city it has never visited is worth nothing. Savor Scout reads menus and reviews when you search, and shows why it picked what it picked.

barbecue, Vietnamese food, seafood, tacos, sandwiches — what separates a good one from an average one, and what to order.
Houston has a population of about 2,195,914. In a city this size the problem is never a lack of options — it is that thirty good ones look identical on a map. Savor Scout searches up to 35 miles around Houston, so places just outside the city are still on the table when they are worth the drive.
How many places to eat are there in Houston?
Houston sits in Harris County, where the Census counts 3,473 full-service restaurants, 3,951 limited-service places, 1,168 cafés and snack bars and 534 bars — 9,126 places to eat or drink in all. Houston makes up about 46% of the county's population.
That works out at 19.3 per 10,000 residents, which is about level with the national median of 19.4 — a normal amount of choice, and a normal amount of indecision. Counter service edges out sit-down, which is the national norm.
Those county figures also cover Pasadena, Baytown, all within Savor Scout's search radius from Houston.

How this differs from Google Maps and Yelp
Maps and Yelp are directories: they rank everything nearby and leave the deciding to you. Savor Scout makes the call and shows its reasoning — the match score, what it beat, and the evidence behind the pick. The underlying place data comes from the same public sources, so the difference is the selection, not the data.
