How to find good Southern food
Southern food covers enormous ground — Lowcountry rice and shrimp, Appalachian beans and cornbread, Delta catfish, Carolina barbecue — and the good restaurants are specific about which South they are cooking.
What separates a good one from a bad one
- Biscuits made from scratch — Tall, flaky, buttery, baked through the morning. A kitchen that buys them frozen tells you a lot.
- Grits that are stone-ground — Coarse, slow-cooked with butter. Instant grits are smooth and bland by comparison.
- A clear regional identity — Lowcountry, Appalachian, Gulf, Delta. Places that say which tend to cook better than places that do all of it.
- Seasonal vegetables — Okra, tomatoes, butter beans, field peas. Southern cooking is as much about vegetables as meat.
- Pie made in-house — Pecan, chess, buttermilk, sweet potato. A dessert case of homemade pie is a good sign.
What to order
- Fried chicken and biscuits — With honey or gravy.
- Shrimp and grits — The Lowcountry classic.
- Country fried steak — With cream gravy.
- A vegetable plate — Several sides as a meal.
- Pie — Whatever is fresh.

How Savor Scout looks for it
The search reads for scratch biscuits, stone-ground grits, regional terms like Lowcountry, and reviews describing sides and pies, which tend to separate cooking from branding in this category.
