How to find good Honduran food
Honduran food is simple and satisfying — flour tortillas folded around beans and cream, fried fish with plantains, coconut seafood soups — and a good Honduran restaurant is usually judged by one thing: the baleadas.
What separates a good one from a bad one
- Baleadas with thick handmade tortillas — Soft, chewy flour tortillas, folded over refried beans, crema and crumbled cheese. Handmade tortillas are essential.
- Plato típico — Grilled steak, beans, rice, plantains, cream, cheese and avocado. Generous is the point.
- Fried whole fish — Pescado frito with tajadas (fried plantain chips) and cabbage salad. Crisp and fresh.
- Coconut soups — Sopa de caracol (conch) and seafood soups made with coconut milk, from the Caribbean coast.
- Tajadas everywhere — Thin fried green plantain slices. Fresh and crisp is a good sign.
What to order
- Baleada sencilla, then with eggs or meat — Start plain to judge it.
- Plato típico — The full plate.
- Pescado frito — Fried fish with tajadas.
- Sopa de caracol — If available.
- Pollo chuco — Fried chicken over plantain chips with cabbage and sauces.
