How to find good Dominican food
Dominican restaurants are everyday places — cheap lunch plates, breakfast mangú, chicken by the pound — and in cities with a big Dominican community they are some of the most reliable food in town.

What separates a good one from a bad one
- La bandera at lunch — Rice, red beans and stewed meat — the Dominican flag. A busy lunch counter serving it is the core of the cuisine.
- Mangú smooth and buttery — Mashed green plantains with pickled red onions, served with fried cheese, salami and eggs (los tres golpes). Breakfast, but available all day at good places.
- Chicharrón de pollo — Bone-in chicken pieces marinated in lime and fried hard. Crisp, sour and salty.
- Sancocho on the weekend — A thick stew of several meats and root vegetables. Many places make it only on weekends.
- Fresh juices and morir soñando — Orange juice and milk shaken together. A good Dominican spot always has fresh juices.
What to order
- La bandera — With stewed chicken or beef.
- Mangú con los tres golpes — Breakfast.
- Chicharrón de pollo — With tostones.
- Sancocho — On the weekend.
- Pastelitos — Fried turnovers.

How Savor Scout looks for it
The search reads for mangú, la bandera, sancocho and Dominican, and looks at lunch-hour reviews, because Dominican restaurants are best judged on everyday plates rather than special-occasion ones.
