How to find good Nepali food
A lot of Nepali restaurants in the US also serve a full Indian menu, because that is what most customers know to ask for. The Nepali section is shorter, cheaper and usually better, and it is where you should be ordering.
What separates a good one from a bad one
- Momo pleated by hand — Nepali dumplings, steamed or fried, with a tomato-sesame achar on the side. Hand-pleated momo are the clearest sign of a kitchen that cares; frozen ones are thicker and uniform.
- Achar with real sourness — The dipping sauces and pickles — tomato, timur pepper, radish — carry a lot of the flavour. Good achar is tangy and bright.
- Dal bhat as a full set — Lentils, rice, vegetable curry, greens and pickle. The everyday meal of Nepal, and a place that serves it properly is cooking for Nepali customers.
- Timur pepper — A Himalayan relative of Sichuan pepper with a citrus, numbing edge. If it shows up in the achar or the sekuwa, the kitchen is cooking its own food.
- A separate Nepali menu — Look for a section labelled Nepali, Himalayan or Newari. That is the point of the visit.
What to order
- Momo — Steamed first, then try jhol momo — dumplings in a spiced soup.
- Dal bhat — The set meal. Often refilled on request.
- Thukpa — Himalayan noodle soup, warming and generous.
- Chicken or goat sekuwa — Spiced, grilled skewers.
- Chatamari or bara — Newari rice crepe and lentil patty, if the menu has them.

How Savor Scout looks for it
Nepali restaurants are usually filed as Indian, so the search reads menus and reviews for momo, dal bhat, thukpa and Himalayan, and favours places where reviewers talk about the Nepali dishes rather than the tikka masala.
