How to find good Egyptian food
Egyptian food is street food at heart — beans, lentils, rice and fried things — cheap, filling and mostly vegetarian, and it is quite different from the Levantine food that dominates Middle Eastern menus in the US.
What separates a good one from a bad one
- Koshari layered properly — Rice, lentils, pasta and chickpeas topped with a sharp tomato-vinegar sauce and crispy fried onions. The onions and the sauce make it.
- Ta'ameya made with fava beans — Egyptian falafel uses fava beans instead of chickpeas, so it is green inside and lighter. A kitchen that makes it this way is cooking Egyptian.
- Ful medames slow-cooked — Stewed fava beans with oil, cumin and lemon. Breakfast, and the national dish.
- Molokhia — A green soup of jute leaves with garlic and coriander. Its texture is slippery and that is correct.
- Fresh baladi bread — Round wholewheat flatbread, puffed and warm.
What to order
- Koshari — The essential first order.
- Ful medames — With bread, onion and pickles.
- Ta'ameya — Fava-bean falafel.
- Hawawshi — Bread stuffed with spiced meat and baked.
- Om ali — Warm bread pudding with nuts and cream.

How Savor Scout looks for it
Egyptian restaurants are often listed as Mediterranean, so the search reads for koshari, ful, ta'ameya and hawawshi in menus and reviews, which reliably separates them.
