How to find good chaat
Chaat is India's snack food — crunchy, tangy, spicy, sweet and cool all at once — and the best chaat comes from small sweet shops and snack counters rather than sit-down restaurants.
What separates a good one from a bad one
- Contrasts in every bite — Crunchy puris, soft potato, cool yoghurt, sweet tamarind, sharp green chutney.
- Assembled to order — Chaat goes soggy fast. It should be put together seconds before you eat it.
- Fresh chutneys — Tamarind and mint-coriander made fresh, bright and punchy.
- Pani puri with real spice water — Crisp hollow puris filled with spiced, tangy water. You eat each one in a single bite.
- A sweet shop counter — Places that sell mithai usually sell good chaat.
What to order
- Pani puri — Also called golgappa.
- Samosa chaat — Crushed samosa with chickpeas and chutneys.
- Bhel puri — Puffed rice, chutneys, onion and sev.
- Papdi chaat — Crisp wafers with yoghurt and chutney.
- Pav bhaji — Spiced vegetable mash with buttered buns.

The search reads for chaat, pani puri, sweet shop and street food, and surfaces snack counters and sweet shops that a restaurant-only filter would miss.
