How to find a good Irish pub and Irish food
Most Irish food in America is served in pubs, and the gap between a real one and a theme bar with a shamrock on the sign is easy to spot once you know where to look: the stew, the bread and how they pour a stout.
What separates a good one from a bad one
- Brown bread made in-house — Dense Irish soda bread with butter. A kitchen that bakes its own is a kitchen that cares.
- Stew with depth — Lamb or beef with root vegetables, slow-cooked. Thin broth with a few cubes of meat is the giveaway.
- A proper full Irish — Rashers, sausages, black and white pudding, eggs, beans, tomato and toast. Pudding on the menu is the sign of the real thing.
- Stout poured in two stages — Filled, allowed to settle, then topped up. Rushed pints are a sign of a rushed bar.
- Quiet enough at lunch — A good pub works at lunch as much as at night. Food that is only an afterthought to the bar is usually reheated.
What to order
- Fish and chips — Battered cod or haddock with thick chips.
- Shepherd's or cottage pie — Lamb or beef under mashed potato.
- Irish stew — With brown bread.
- Full Irish breakfast — If served, and especially on a weekend.
- Bangers and mash — With onion gravy.

How Savor Scout looks for it
The search reads reviews for food-specific language — stew, brown bread, black pudding, fish and chips — rather than the word Irish, which is used by plenty of bars that serve little food at all.
