How to find good mariscos
Mariscos — Mexican seafood — is its own restaurant world: bright, cold, spicy dishes built on lime, chilli and the freshest shrimp, served loud with music and micheladas.
What separates a good one from a bad one
- Aguachile with real heat — Raw shrimp cured briefly in lime with chilli, cucumber and onion. It should be bright green or red, very spicy and very fresh.
- Cóctel de camarón — Shrimp in a cold, tangy tomato-lime broth with avocado. Served in a big glass with crackers.
- Fresh tostadas — Crisp corn tostadas piled with ceviche or seafood.
- Whole fried fish — Mojarra frita, crisp all over, served with rice and salad.
- A Sinaloa or Nayarit accent — Many of the best mariscos come from those Pacific states. Reviewers who mention them are usually right.
What to order
- Aguachile — Green or red.
- Cóctel de camarón — Or campechana, with mixed seafood.
- Tostada de ceviche — As a starter.
- Mojarra frita — Whole fried fish.
- Michelada — To drink.

The search reads for aguachile, cóctel, mariscos and Sinaloa-style, and keeps mariscos restaurants separate from taquerias and seafood chains.
